After showing a stunning collection of monumental charcoal drawings in his ‘Mantera’ exhibition at VWFA last year, Jalaini Abu Hassan (Jai) returns in June with paintings and working drawings using water-based paints. The artist experiments with a new medium whilst continuing to explore images from his past and present. A new brand of energy can be expected in this series as Jai searches for a more instinctive manner of painting. As Jai states: “Each artist has their own process and strategies. In this case, I’m throwing everything out the window – unlearning what I know, interrupting the rules in painting, moving against what I’ve taught to my students all this while. You can say I’m starting from scratch, experimenting all over again. Let’s see where this will take me.” And so we shall see in ‘Wet Paint’.

Artist Profile:
Jalaini Abu Hassan or “Jai” was born in Selangor in 1963, but spent most of his childhood in Taiping. In 1985 he took his BA in Fine Art at MARA Institute of Technology, and was awarded a Malaysian Federal Scholarship to continue his studies in the UK. In 1988, he gained his MA from the prestigious Slade School in London. Awarded a MARA Scholarship to study in the USA, he then took his Master of Fine Art degree at New York's famous Pratt Institute, graduating in 1994. Jai has exhibited in Malaysia, Singapore, America and the UK and also in Spain and Iraq. His works are in the collection of the National Art Gallery in Malaysia and in private, corporate and gallery collections around the world. Jai was most recently the recipient of the Rado Switzerland Commission Award. The artist is currently teaching at UiTM.
